Scenario: Okay, you are one of the world's richest billionaires in the U.S. (Larry Ellison) and likes to win in sailing and courts, what are you doing?Of course you need engineers to make real an idea together with a team.

Scenario: Well, suppose you are one of Europe's richest billionaires (Ernesto Bertarelli) and always used to win in sailing and, therefore, must arrange 33rd Americas Cup.Vad are you doing?

But life is hard and the Americans won the trial (one of many lawsuits) on Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE as invalid racing seat, therefore, the whole team move to Valencia, Spain.
Well how is one of those contests coached physically then ?

First day of the race:
Lessons from the first day is that it does not matter which boat you are, the blow is nothing you can not sail. The start was not because of lack of wind, the whole thing was simply a perfect test that everything works before startup. Sailors have been tested to leave port at 05.00 and feel the winter air in Valencia really ruggigt cold. Especially fun for us spectators were to see how it looks when even billionaires have to sit and freeze on deck in anticipation of a start-up not occurred.

An interesting comparison, as we heard about was that the little leadbulb at last year's keel boats weighing as much as the whole of these two multi-hull boats together, only a small leadlump then! Talk about what weighs the most, "a kilo iron or one kilo cotton?". In addition to the boats and crews are drilled around today, we have been able to test the network users who live broadcasts on the Internet. It looks like a bandwidth of over 7Mbit/sek is advisable to follow the three main broadcast. See above for links. Sum of the bottom line is that you have not missed anything unless you saw the first day.
Other race day:
Those who are waiting for that good things sometimes too long, it was canceled again. Today, it was because of the large waves, about 1.5 meters, the limit is at 1 meter for boats not be turned into coal dust.
BMW Oracle has some cards up his sleeve in this competition, high tech rather short. Since you want to save weight on the boat and weather information may only be collected prior to 5 minutes before take-off, and you have a weather expert on board with all the world's equipment, which then all must skip in the water! The only thing I'm worried about is that Alinghi run over him because it would be certain death to meet a centerboard or rudder.

James Spithill, helmsman has a huge responsibility at the start, it is hard to see from the back of the boat and because of the high speed! To achieve this, he has a small device in the eye with a fighter pilot technology (NearEyeDevice). In his sunglasses are projected the necessary information on how far the startline is, and another (the team's home-made software), maybe something to invest in for the next season?
Besides that, Spithill was forced to take a pilot training to cope with his mate job, it can be a bit more difficult than to control an optimist with other words. As if it would be impossible to save more weight on BMW Oracle to have actually done just that! This in order to be becoming better at light wind as Alinghi. Both the netting and hardware and other things have been attacked with cuttingtools, no wonder that, common sense, Russell Coutts is afraid of the boat!
Furthermore, a fun comparison between last year's keel boats is that the mast is twice as high at this years multihulls!

Tredje race day:
Weather conditions are excellent in Valencia today, today is the D day. The sun blazes, breeze from land, 3meter/sec on the ground, It doesnt get better than that. But it is still not good enough for the boats when they expect to start not until around 12:00 when the weather is stabilized at 5 meter/sec in collaboration with the land breeze. The only thing sailors must endure is the beginning zero degree weather, but because it is salt water, freezing is not happening to rigid lines mm.

The start took place at around 14.10 today, an event that will not be forgotten for a long time. After the weather office bailed BMW Oracle and the 5 minutes pre start duelling started, there was a moment at wich we all thougt the race would end before it started. Both boats raced against eachother in neckbreaking speeds to machrace. Alinghi missjudged the room to manouver and almost crashed into BMW who made an emergency move to windward.
After this both boats stalled against the wind, going nowhere until the seconds before start where Alinghi got a 600 meter advance over BMW Oracle who had huge problems with their stalled wing going backwards. Alinghi got a 360 penalty though so the exitement was total!
BMW Oracle shurely had a trick up its sleeve, moving both faster and higher than their opponents both up and downwind, a big supprise to us all, espessially Ernesto Bertarelli, owner, helmsman and CEO of the Alinghi team. Loosing with a huge margin of 3500 meters a number easily obtained in fast multihull competitions when technology is unmached. Oboy a day to rember for us all both good and bad. Most impressive was when BMW Oracle removed their foresail to just use the wing to eliminate some parasitic drag despite the sail being the motor.

If Alinghi does not have enormous potential lying around in their shed somewhere being found soon, this race will likely be won by the Americans and their spaceage technology.
Fjärde race day:Another fantastic sailingday this Sunday, which most likely is the last day of the race if BMW Oracle does not break down. The weather is sunny with about 7 degrees, perfectly fine in Valencia this time of year. The breeze will start some time between 11.00 and 14.00. The wind will then turn entirely opposite and therefore the race can not begin until this has occurred. Today the boats will sail a triangular course where we may see rapid speeds!
A day with mistakes, 100% concentration and two different sized boats. Oh my, what a drama, after the longest possible waiting for take-off until four o clock in the afternoon to start. Before the start Alinghi unfortunately did a mistake. They had not gotten out of the starting box before the 5 minute signal so now they were not only punished with a 360. But also gave BMW Oracle a strategic advantage in positioning for a good start since Alinghi also became very late back into the starting box. Unfortunately BMW Oracle also had a good start and took the lead on the the opposite tack of Alinghi. But after well into the first leg, Alinghi unexpectedly sailed absolutely flawless, thanks to Loic who took over the weel. A very exciting lead of over 300 meters was created to everyone's surprise. At the end of the first leg, they were close again.
BMW on the left and Alinghi on the right before rounding.
The gap had decreased to only 60 meters and Alinghi had a tack left to do and as they were too late with it, that they did not tack in front of BMW Oracle to prevent them from passing. From here BMWO's lead grew steadily and rapidly on legs 2 and 3.
In a fantastic evening sun the absolute coolest trimarans ever eventually sailed across the line after about 2 hours and with Alinghi more than 2 km behind.
A boat which both were less wide, had a shorter mast and not a wingsail which physically prevented them to excell in this race. Generationwise for multi-hull boats, it has been a triumph in every way. Alinghi took a development step forward to at least the fifth generation multihull, with more datapoints than ever, and alarms for overloading forces, a digital era. BMW Oracle, however, took two giant leaps by learning everything that fourth-generation ORMA60 trimarans in France was. Plus all the knowledge about wing sails, which were developed since the 60's in the United States. They created the sixth generation multihull, where the entire boat was registered in a digital world and its surroundings. In this way, they had two boats to compare the tuning, one virtual, based on previous sailing and real one where all possible configurations were experimented with.
The minimal wetted surface of BMW Oracle.
This is undoubtedly an expensive way to create a boat, but if you want to win by challenging all limitations, except for a hull length of 90 feet, it is the "easiest" way. Everything good like this race has an ending, but as with any end, it is also the beginning of something new. All I can say after this trip is: Espectacular!
